Our Name Sake
Nancy Smith Elementary School was named in honor of Mrs. Nancy Smith in the spring of 1958.

Nancy Jo Adamson was born on a farm one mile east of Moran, Texas on May 31, 1889. She began a fifty year teaching career in Moran in the fall of 1906, just past her seventeenth birthday and graduation from Albany High School. She transfered to Albany Schools in 1910 to a fine modern stone building that had just been built on School House Hill in the middle of Albany. In those days, Mrs. Smith was known to several generations as "Miss Nannie."

In 1918 Nancy Adamson married Elmer Smith. She taught 50 years in Albany Schools with a leave of absence in 1928 for the birth of her daughter.

In the spring of 1958 Mrs. Smith announced her retirement from teaching. May 20, 1958 was declared "Nancy Smith Day" in Albany. Three hundred fifty people were present that evening to honor her service. Mrs. Smith was presented with red roses and a diamond pin. The climax of the evening was the revelation that the Albany Elementary School would be known as Nancy Smith Elementary School.

Mrs. Nancy Smith died unexpectedly at the age of 70 years but her memory will live on forever.

Nancy Smith was a teacher who dedicated her service to others. It has been said of Nancy Smith,"...that she can gather around her desk each September a new group of beginners and offer each new group the same helpful interest and enthusiasm which she showed right at the beginning of her teaching life."
